Bell’s Le Contrebassiste Tapping and Tap Takeover at Tuman’s Tap & Grill Wednesday, March 4

Be one of the few in Chicago to try Le Contrebassiste, a reimagined version of the brewery’s Jazz Series beer of the same name at this Bell’s Brewery tap takeover. The 2015 release is a rustic brown ale brewed with Brettanomyces yeast for a funky, fruity, light-tart finish. There are only four quarter barrels of Le Contrebassiste in all of Chicago, and the first will be tapped at this event. Rye Stout, an Eccentric Café pub exclusive rarely seen outside of Kalamazoo, Michigan will also be tapped, and the last few barrels of the 2015 releases of Hopslam Ale and Smitten Golden Rye Ale have been reserved for the event. Two year-round drafts, Amber Ale and Two Hearted Ale, round out the lineup.

Monica Mooney provides Bell’s beer education during the event. Free raffles and giveaways during the party include hats, T-shirts and other logoed Bell’s gear. The beers will be tapped at 4 p.m. and the event begins at 6 p.m. Tuman’s Tap & Grill is open from 4 p.m.-2 a.m. on March 4 and the kitchen is open until 11 p.m. The event is free to attend and beer prices range from $5-$8 each.

Featured Bell’s Brewery Beers
Rye Stout, American-Style Stout, Eccentric Café Pub Exclusive, 6.5% ABV
This full-bodied stout, which is lighter than many in the Bell’s portfolio, is peppered with the earthy flavor of rye. The roasted malts show through, but dark chocolate is favored over coffee notes

Le Contrebassiste, Rustic Brown Ale, Limited Release/First Tapping, 7% ABV
The 2015 release is a reimagined version of the original Jazz Series beer of the same name. The 2015 version draws on the original’s malt and hop profile and swaps the French Ale yeast used in past versions for the unique, funky, tart notes of a Brettanomyces yeast. The ale is fermented with Brettanomyces in Bell’s oak foeders (30-year-old tanks formerly used for wine making); the ageing provides a distinctive, complementary yeast character

Hopslam, Double India Pale Ale, Winter Seasonal, 10% ABV
Highly sought after annual beer with huge hop aromas and grapefruit, citrus, stone fruit and floral notes

Smitten, Golden Rye Ale, Late Winter/Early Spring Seasonal, 6.0% ABV
One of Bell’s oldest recipes, Smitten originated as part of the brewery’s rye series at the Eccentric Café. Citrusy resinous hop flavors with earthy, rustic notes from the rye malt

Amber Ale, Year-Round, 5.8% ABV
Caramel and toasted malts with herbal and citrus hop aromas and clean bitterness

Two Hearted Ale, American-Style India Pale Ale, Year-Round, 7.0% ABV
Hopped exclusively with the Pacific Northwest Centennial hop varietal; solid malt balance with grapefruit and pine resin aromas
